A Journey Through an Endless Night, Flying Fearlessly Toward the Light
On May 5, 2016, a text message from China Airlines management announced that the long-standing 12-hour limit on flight attendants‘ maximum working hours would no longer apply. Years of unfair treatment, occupational injuries, and mounting workplace pressure finally reached a breaking point, leading to Taiwan’s first-ever flight attendants‘ strike, which lasted for several weeks.
Inspired by the China Airlines strike, EVA Air flight attendants launched their own 17-day strike in 2019. Throughout the prolonged negotiations and confrontations with management, they endured not only pressure from the company, but also misunderstanding from some colleagues and even family members. After the strike ended, many also faced legal claims and lawsuits brought by their employer.
Looking back a decade later, the strikes resemble a solitary flight through an endless night. Even without knowing where the journey would end or when they would arrive, the flight attendants continued to move forward—with quiet resolve, unwavering courage, and their eyes fixed on the light.
