In the 1990s, under President Lee Teng-hui’s leadership, Taiwan quietly underwent a democratic movement later known as the “The Quiet Revolution.” Without bloodshed, the people of Taiwan broke free from restrictions on thought, freedom, and human rights, successfully transitioning to democracy.
Now, on the fifth anniversary of President Lee’s passing, the Lee Teng-hui Foundation and Institute for Information Industry have used generative AI and modern technology to recreate the image and voice of “Mr. Democracy.” Taiwan’s first elected president returns to the present to engage the public in a dialogue on democracy and its legacy.
The first exhibition zone invites direct “dialogue” with President Lee. The second focuses on “reading” to broaden understanding. The third allows visitors to “Photograph,” marking the encounter.
Though Taiwan still faces many challenges, in uncertain times, it is even more vital for its people to stay united, hold fast to democratic values, and carefully pass on the torch of democracy through dialogue, reading, and remembrance.
